Fun Fall Ideas and Traditions

Fall is my favorite season. I love the crisp air and getting cozy. When my husband and I first got married I used to love lighting spice candles and making comfort food for us for dinner. We used to put on some music, enjoy some Italian sausage soup, and dim the lights. Meanwhile, the sky outside would be getting dark early and we watched the orange leaves swirling around in the wind. It was wonderful. What do you love about this season? There are so many great fall ideas you can do with your family to make this time special.

We have put together some fall ideas that you will love to enjoy with your family.

1. Football

Every year, our family plans an outing to a college football game. We make a weekend of it, and our kids enjoy hanging out “on campus” before the game. If you can’t make it to a college came, then try heading out to a local high school’s football game.

2. Holiday Baking

I love spending a Sunday afternoon going through all my holiday recipes, planning ahead what I’ll cook for Thanksgiving and Christmas. The kids decide what kinds of cookies we’ll bake and decorate, and everyone votes on the pie choices!

3. Leaves

Raking up a big pile of leaves and taking photos while my kids jump in and roll around. This usually requires several “takes” but I always come away with some great pictures I can use for scrapbooking holiday cards and Christmas letters.

4. Hiking

When the weather gets cooler, we just have to hike— even if it’s only the nature trail through the park. There’s always nature to observe and it gets everyone out of the house for a while.

5. Hot Chocolate and Games

We live in the city, but we have a small fire pit on our patio. We pick a cold day and right around sunset, we make a small file and toast marshmallows and enjoy the colorful sky. Once the sun goes down, we go inside and make hot chocolate and play a good, long game of Monopoly™.

6. Pumpkin

Every year, we try to come up with a new pumpkin recipe. Some of our favorites have been pumpkin soup, pumpkin muffins, pumpkin salsa, and pumpkin pancakes. We’ll keep going every year until we’ve tried every possible pumpkin recipe!

7. Pinecones

The kids love hunting for pinecones. They each get a bucket or basket and head out into the yard on a quest for the perfect pinecone. It’s a little competition for them, to see who can find the biggest, the most symmetrical, and the most oddly-shaped ones. Then we use the pinecones for decorative projects. They create pinecone turkeys with colorful construction paper “feathers” for the tail. Sometimes we spray paint the pinecones gold and make Christmas tree ornaments.
