When I was little I remember being at a friend’s house until dark. I ran through the woods on my way home seeing my breath with every step. The lights of my house were just barely visible through the trees. As I walked into the backyard I could see through the window a roaring fire in the fireplace. There’s nothing like coming in from the cold and getting cozy.
I love this time of year. I still love coming out of the cold and getting cozy, but now I get to get cozy with my husband. It’s a great opportunity to spice up your relationship. One of our favorite traditions to do together this time of year is to sit close on the couch with hot chocolate, turn down the lights, light a fire or candles, and watch White Christmas. The winter months don’t have to be dreary—in fact, they can be the time of year when you cozy up to your sweetie and make up for lost time.
Here are some ways to spice up your relationship this year.
1. Get Artsy.
If most of your life is spent navigating sippy cups and t-ball schedules together, you may have forgotten how cool and interesting your husband really is. Do something distinctly grown-up and stimulating together, like checking out a museum or taking in a play. It’s an on-ramp to great conversations you just won’t have over a pile of laundry.
2. Take On a Challenge Together.
It’s a new year and lots of people are making resolutions and tackling challenges. Why not go for it together? If you’re both training for a 10k or eating healthier, you’ll encourage and keep one another accountable, upping your chance of success. The best part? Celebrating together when you make it!
3. Go Ice Skating.
You may not be ready for the couples competition in the next Winter Olympics, but that’s just a good excuse to hold hands. We promise you’ll laugh—and that’s always good for a marriage! No ice rink around? An afternoon of sledding and playing in the snow is fun, too!
Take advantage of a chilly day spent indoors and write a letter to your husband telling him how much he means to you. It doesn’t have to be pages long, just real and sincere. Be bold and tell him what it is about him that “lights your fire” or makes you sexually attracted to him! Trust us, he’ll love hearing it, and good things will follow.
5. Try a New Restaurant Together.
And we don’t mean the new location of a favorite chain. Be adventurous! Try a new ethnic cuisine like Indian or Thai food. Even if you both hate it, research shows that people who share a dislike for something form a bond. (Relationship win!) If you like it, just imagine how sophisticated you’ll feel.
